Introduction to 3D Printing for Rapid Prototyping
The seminar takes place in the FabLab (Sandstr. 26, 1.OG (IS-S 107)).
Due to the current situation of COVID-19, only 20 students can be signed up for this course.
Rapid prototyping can is a valuable tool in design processes. 3D printing can offer opportunities to create conceptual, haptic prototypes at low-cost quickly. Objects can be evaluated with users and in the field.
This seminar requires active participation in presence, as well as self-study. It will be divided into a theoretical part and a practical part. During the practical part, there will be home assignments as well.
In this seminar students will get/learn…
- an overview and work safety insights into the Fab Lab
- an overview of additive manufacturing technologies
- an overview of the production process from idea to finished product
- hands-on experience on how to use desktop 3D printers
- hands-on experience with human-centered research methods
Students will be asked to…
- prepare presentations on predefined topics
- use 3D modeling software during the sessions to design objects
- print objects on-site as well as remotely
- document the remote printing experience with a research diary

Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, Test: Usability Methods in Practice
This seminar is about providing an overview of usability methods and introductory hands-on experience. To be able to conceptualize, design, implement and test human-centered IT systems, methods are important. We will work on and try out different methods for conceptualizing, analyzing and evaluating user data in an interactive workshop format. The goal of the seminar will be to publish the developed materials online as an open-access toolkit.
For example: Persona, Customer Journey Map, Thinking, Aloud, Paper Prototyping, Storyboard, AttrakDiff, Wireframing and many more.

But what exactly is 3D printing? How does it work? Is it even feasible for your projects?

Prototyping in the Internet-of-Things
The Internet of Things is evolving incredibly fast due to falling hardware costs and pervasive Internet connectivity (5G). Applications range from small sensors that record environmental information to multisensory applications that combine sensors with actuators to control physical processes.
There are a variety of open-source, easy-to-use hardware and software platforms (e.g., Arduino) that have made microcontrollers and electronics accessible to the general public. These platforms can be found in a variety of devices such as 3D printers, quadcopters and robots. These devices follow the trend of adding more and more networking and communication capabilities and are pushing into Internet of Things applications.
In this seminar, we will introduce prototyping in the Internet of Things. Here we focus on the Arduino programming language. We start with the basic structures of an Arduino program and the most important programming instructions like conditions or loops. Furthermore, we go into advanced microcontroller-specific programming patterns such as interrupts and show how the microcontrollers used can communicate to the Internet via WiFi. The fundamentals of electrical engineering are also taught. Beginning with electrical voltage, current and resistance and ending with their relationship to each other. Based on these fundamentals, students will create example circuits in which students connect electrical components (sensors and actuators), read sensor data, process the data, and control actuators with microcontrollers.
