Starting Wednesday, October 13, the Fab Lab Siegen will open again – every Wednesday from 2 to 8 p.m. you can tinker. For the time being, the 3G rule and a maximum limit of 20 visitors will apply. After the closure in spring 2020 due to the pandemic, some things have changed in the Fab Lab.

At the beginning of this year, the Fab Lab moved from Herrengarten to Sandstraße 26 (Reichwalds Ecke), as the Herrengarten demolition is imminent. So, the reopening can also be seen as a kind of fresh start. The Fab Lab is now staying in the House of Innovations. Thus, there are neighbors at the new location. The start-up incubator One Small Step from the start-up initiative Startpunkt57 in Siegen-Wittgenstein and ventUS – a support program for start-up projects at the University of Siegen. The offer around the Fab Lab has thus become more diverse.

After such a long time, we are happy to finally be able to open up again for Maker:ins and interested parties and to offer people a space for creative work and exchange once more. Even more so in the new premises with more space for creativity. Access and use are still free of charge during regular opening hours for the region!

The Fab Lab is equipped with machines, technologies and tools for (digitally supported) making and repairing (almost all) things. It aims to contribute to a more sustainable society. As part of the University of Siegen, it offers a place for creativity, experimentation and exchange for all people, regardless of education and knowledge level. You don’t have to be a student to try out new things and tinker in the Fab Lab. In addition, the Fab Lab at the new location is also aimed at startups and companies for prototyping, small batch production and insight into digital technologies.

Since the Fab Lab attaches great importance to occupational safety, only those who have attended an appropriate safety training course are allowed to work there. For this reason, there will be safety briefings at 2 p.m., 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. on October 13th. Starting on October 20, regular safety instruction will then take place at 4 p.m. on Wednesdays. Registration is not necessary. Registration is not necessary. Just like use, safety instruction is free.

Due to the pandemic, masks are mandatory in the Fab Lab except at the seat with a safety distance. Fully vaccinated, recovered and negatively tested individuals have access to the Fab Lab. Self-guided use is free, but everyone brings their own materials.

The Fab Lab offers digitally supported manufacturing processes and classic craft areas. Among them, various 3D printing processes with plastics such as FLM (Fused Layer Modeling), SLA (Stereolithography) & SLS (Laser-Sintering), as well as two CO2 laser cutting and engraving machines, a collaborative robotic arm, a cutting plotter, a CNC router, an electrical workshop, the possibility of textile processing and a craft area. More information about the machines and the Fab Lab is available at fablab-siegen.de.

The Fab Lab shares its new domicile in the House of Innovations with the start-up initiative Startpunkt57 and the start-up office of the University of Siegen. This spatial proximity is intended to help companies, founders, inventors, creatives and anyone who wants to become one, to try out and implement creative ideas quickly and easily. Creative minds are thus supported in founding their own company out of a creative passion.
